MEADOWS OPENING THANKSGIVING DAY!

11-21-2012

MEADOWS OPENING THANKGIVING DAY!

For the fourth consecutive season lifts will be turning on Thanksgiving day at Mt. Hood Meadows. The resort will open for the 2012/13 season Thanksgiving, with four lifts scheduled to operate from 9 AM – 4 PM. The resort currently has a 33 inch base, thanks to almost two feet of snow which has fallen since Saturday. And with more snow forecast this weekend, resort officials are confident the resort will continue daily operations for the season.

Lifts scheduled include the Mt. Hood Express high speed quad, Daisy, Easy Rider and the Buttercup beginner chair. The “Fun Zone” serviced by Mt. Hood’s only enclosed conveyer – the Ballroom Carpet – will also operate. Early season conditions exist, with good to thin coverage on the groomed runs, with exposed grass, rocks – skiers and snowboarders should be aware of unmarked obstacles. More lifts and terrain will be opened as snow coverage and conditions allow. Meadows Shipyard park will feature several rails for some early season jibbing.

Uphill traffic will be allowed only on designated climbing routes - no uphill within the permit area as Meadows crew and equipment on the mountain preparing for opening.

Day lift passes will be $59 for adults, $39 for ages 14 and under (and seniors 65 and older) and $10 for 6 ages and under on opening day. The price will increase as more lifts and terrain are added.

Atomic skis crushing it in industry gear reviews!

Atomic skis crushing it in industry gear reviews!

The results are in and fourteen different skis from Atomic’s new 2012/13 line collectively earned 34 awards this fall from the top U.S. ski-focused print magazines including Powder, Backcountry, Freeskier, Ski, Skiing, Outside, Mountain, as well as online publication, Onthesnow.com.

Leading the charge are two brand new skis from Atomic: the Automatic and the Ritual. The Automatic, which scored 7 awards from the top publications, was created with the help of Atomic athletes Sage Cattabriga-Alosa and Dana Flahr to give them a hard charging powder weapon with a more directional shape than the playful Bent Chetler. The all new Ritual, part of the Atomic Vantage Series, collected 6 awards including a #3 Draft pick from Powder Magazine and one of Outside Magazine’s Gear of the Year awards. One Powder tester even said. “This incredibly fast and versatile ski has more fun than a tornado in a trailer park!”

And not to be forgotten, the Atomic Bent Chetler snagged Powder Magazine’s #1 Draft pick in the powder category this year securing its position as the best powder ski of 12/13!

On the ladies’ side, the Affinity Storm received Skiing Magazine’s top honor, Tester Choice 2013, along with other honors, while the brand new Millennium proved itself as Atomic’s best high performance powder ski winning 3 awards – Freeskier Magazine’s Editor’ Choice, Skiing Magazine’s 2013 Official Selection and Backcountry Magazine’s Gear Guide Select.

Representing every category of the 2012/13 Atomic collection, individual skis took home a lot of glory in the US market. “All of us at Atomic are incredibly honored to have received such great recognition for such key products,” says Jake Strassburger, Atomic’s Alpine Product Category Manager. “These accolades help us keep driving our brand momentum in the US and we look forward to continuing to develop amazing equipment for skiers everywhere.”

Pre-Season Ski & Snowboard Checklist

Pre-Season Ski & Snowboard Checklist

Inspect and prep your gear, outerwear and accessories for the upcoming season!

Before the first snowflakes start flying, smart skiers and snowboarders take the time to go through their closets and garages to make sure their first day is stress-free. Doing a little prep early in the season can go a long way when you’re itching to get on the hill. So, that’s why we have put together a handy pre-season check-list that can help get everyone on the hill a little faster the day after an epic snowfall.

Equipment

When’s the last time you had your skis/snowboard tuned? If the answer is “I can’t remember” then it’s time to get your equipment in for a tune. A general rule of thumb: if you've ridden five times on your boards, it’s time for a tune-up. Plus, an expert wax and sharpening makes skis/snowboards last longer and provide more control for turns and stopping.

Gloves/Mittens

If your hands are blocks of ice, you’re not going to enjoy any winter activity and your dexterity and performance is also affected. Make sure the whole family has a pair that fits properly. If you tend to have cold hands, try mittens!

Jackets/Pants

Does your jacket still fit? Have your kids outgrown their outerwear? Are they up to the demands of winter activities? Some kids Prejackets and pants have hems that can be let out to get one more year of wear. However, if you/your kids are heading out on the slopes in varying weather conditions, it’s worth it to invest in well-made, quality outerwear.

Travel/Pass/Lesson Discounts

Fall is the time to take advantage of discounts on travel packages, lessons and lift tickets/passes. Check with your local resort and retailer or a destination resort you’ve been planning to visit to see if they’re offering any “early bird specials”.

Helmet

Do you have one – does your kid need the next size up? For all ages of skiers/snowboarder, helmets are becoming the norm on the slopes. Not only do they protect against head injuries, but also provide warmth since up to 60% of your body's heat can escape from an uncovered head. If you have been in the same helmet for years now, it is time to upgrade!

Goggles

If you can’t see where you’re headed on a mountain, you’re in big trouble. It’s amazing how much fun you can have on a mountain when glare, snow and flat light aren’t holding you back so make sure your goggles still fit properly. Check to make sure your goggles still fit and didn’t suffer too many scratches last season.

How to prepare for Labor Day weekend camping trip...

08-27-2012

When you begin to prepare for a Labor Day camping trip, keep in mind that this is a unique weekend that may require some special considerations. Whether you want to stay close to the city to enjoy the fireworks display or you want to escape from mainstream celebrations to enjoy some quiet time, preparing in advance is vital to ensuring you enjoy a successful weekend.

  1. Research a few campgrounds and choose one that offers the level of comfort you are happy with. Some people require a flush toilet and shower facilities to feel comfortable, while others don't mind the roughness of the back country.

  2. Check with the campground you've decided on about any special rules, such as no pets or no children under the age of 12. You'll also need to find out what kind of camping equipment is permitted. Some campgrounds only allow tents, while others allow full RVs and trailers.

  3. Find out about special events, fireworks displays and other Labor Day weekend activities in the area where you're camping. This will allow you to better prepare for the trip and bring along any extras fireworks you may need.

  4. Ask about the insect and bear population in the area. Because of the changing weather, some animals may become more active and require additional protection on your part. There are several varieties of spray-on insect repellent, which are carried by most major retailers.

  5. Decide how you are going to eat. If there is a general store near the campground, you may be able to pick up your meals on a daily basis. If not, you'll need to come up with a plan for cooking and storing meals, especially if your campsite doesn't have electricity or running water.

  6. Check the condition of your first aid kit. If it's been a while since you've been camping, your medications and bandages may be due for replacement.

Be sure to stop by 2nd Wind Sports before you head out. We have all the gear you need:

TENTS, SLEEPING BAGS, PADS, FIRST AID KIT, WATER BOTTLE, CAMPING SOAP, FOOD, HEADLAMPS, FUEL, STOVES, BACKPACKS, BUG SPRAY, TENT STAKES, WATER PURIFIERS, and MORE.

About the CGKA:

The Columbia Gorge Kiteboarding Association represents the kiteboarders of the Gorge and is dedicated to the preservation and improvement of safe kiteboarding access to the Columbia River.

The CGKA holds a number of work/improvement parties at the beginning of each season. The large number of volunteers who show up to work has been recognized by the governing bodies in the gorge as well as other associations like the CGWA. Some of the work we have done has simply been impressive, like the Hood River Sandbar cleanups.

Kiteboarding has come a long way in The Gorge.

This is due in part to the kiteboarding community’s accomplishments and behavior over the past few years. As an example, by doing a great job in self policing the no-fly zone in front of the Event Site as an example has earned us the right to begin asking for a change in rules. Last summer, the CGKA worked with the Port to arrange for temporary high water access for kiters at the event site and Marina.

In 2008, we got the Port of HR to allow kiteboarding at the Eventsite from October 1st through April 30th every year. Now, you can now pump and dry your kite at the eastern end of the Eventsite all summer long.

We are a volunteer organization. Our progress is based on community help and involvement. Your dues and participation make it happen. Look for CGKA events and become a part of it!
